Brad is the owner and underwriting counsel at Harbor City Title. He is responsible for both the Commercial and Residential Title underwriting teams.

A licensed title agent and underwriter in both North Carolina and South Carolina, Brad manages and oversees all transactions leveraging his focused legal industry experience to bring creative solutions to title insurance issues ranging from residential matters to complex commercial real estate transactions in excess of $100 million.

A licensed attorney in North Carolina and South Carolina, Brad is an active member of the North Carolina Bar Association (Real Property Section), and the South Carolina Bar Association. Brad provides the required attorney certifications and services incidental to transactions in both states. Additionally, he is an active member of the North Carolina Land Title Institute (NCLTA).

A native Charlottean, Brad received his undergraduate degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his law degree from the Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.

A licensed attorney and underwriter in both North Carolina and South Carolina, John assists with underwriting, drawing on his many years of closing experience, and his excellent relationship with his underwriters, to bring practical and innovative solutions to problems confronting closing attorneys on their transactions. In January 2024, John retired from full time practice.

In 2008, after nearly 25 years of experience as a real estate attorney and title counsel, John Surles founded Harbor City Title in Charlotte, North Carolina. John works primarily on commercial real estate transactions, overseeing everything from routine refinance transactions to complex, multi-state purchases in excess of $250 million.

In 1987, John entered private law practice focusing primarily on real estate, first as a partner with the Wishart Norris law firm, and later as a partner at McMillan, Surles & Terry, PA.  John joined the title insurance industry in 2001when he became General Counsel and Senior Underwriter for Colonial Title Company.

John received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He moved to Charlotte in 1982, where he joined Bahakel Communications and handled real estate and contract matters for the multi-state radio and television broadcast company.

With nearly 30 years’ experience in real estate closings, Lisa Marker is the lead commercial underwriter for Harbor City Title. Lisa oversees the commercial team ensuring that searches, analysis and evaluation of records are completed in a timely manner for all Harbor City Title clients. Lisa routinely reviews complex title matters providing clients with a title commitment that reflects the current status of title.

With a concentration in commercial title work, Lisa’s responsibilities include:

  • Examine title search documents to determine the appropriate requirements to clear title, exceptions from coverage, legal description, and vested owner of subject property to be included in the title commitment.

  • Evaluate which documents need to be reviewed to determine the insurability of the property and the insured parties of a transaction.

  • Create and revise title commitments as necessary.

  • Review ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys and incorporating them into the Commitment/Pro Forma, including review of exceptions as they affect the property, and review of adjoiner land when easements are to be insured.

  • Preparation of closing statements for refinance and purchase transactions, working with lenders, buyers, sellers and their counsel; disbursement of transactions.

Lisa Marker has been with Harbor City Title since the company’s founding in 2008. Prior to Harbor City Title, Lisa was a paralegal handling residential real estate closings for more than 15 years and earned her North Carolina Certified paralegal designation in 2007.  Lisa is a member of both the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) of Charlotte and the Metrolina Paralegal Association.

With nearly 20 years’ experience in the residential title insurance industry, Mrs. Lockwood has experience as a licensed title insurer and closer with deep knowledge of transactional real estate and the title insurance industry. Christine is a graduate of University of Central Florida, a certified life coach, and lives with her husband and three children in Mooresville, NC.

Stacey joined the Harbor City Title Commercial team in March 2015, and possesses more than 20 years in the title insurance industry, the majority of that with the First American Title office located in Largo, Florida. Stacey’s work is dedicated to effectively managing transaction and project timelines, working closely with internal and external teams delivering world class customer support, including:

  • Acting as direct point of contact for First American GOST-Global Operations Support Teams.

  • Upon receiving new order requests, reviews, coordinates, facilitates ordering of North Carolina and South Carolina searches.

  • Acting as liaison between abstractors.

  • Certifying attorneys and clients throughout the process successfully resolving questions and concerns.

  • Examine title search documents to determine the appropriate requirements to clear title, exceptions from coverage, legal description, and vested owner of subject property to be included in the title commitment.

  • Create and prepare title commitments and revisions as necessary for client review.

  • Provide customer assistance with items necessary for closing, including invoices, follow-up documentation, and post-closing assistance with return of original documents.

Angelique joined the Harbor City Title residential team in 2020 in a production capacity. She assists abstractors looking for prior policies, and has primary responsibility for getting final policies to buyers and lenders. Originally from Massachusetts, she moved to North Carolina in 2003 after receiving her Paralegal Certificate and has been in the real estate field ever since.
